The Denton, Texas Grammy-winning band, Brave Combo, realized that their usual/unusual set list of music from around world might help shine a spotlight to confront the darkness of prejudice and racism influencing our country today. Two performances highlighting “Immigrant Songs” are currently scheduled for the Dallas area. The first, on Friday, March 31 at Poor David’s Pub in Dallas, Texas, followed the next night, Saturday, April 1 in the band’s hometown of Denton, Texas at Dan’s Silverleaf. The group plans to enlighten, as well as perform, by explaining the origins of many of the evening’s eclectic offerings. On Friday night, at Poor David’s Pub, as an added surreal attraction, Brave Combo will be joined by the winners of the Flower Mound, Texas SCHOOL OF ROCK. By the end of the night, this could definitely be a SCHOOL OF POLKA, too!
Per Brave Combo’s Carl Finch, “From the beginning of the band in 1979, Brave Combo has benefited directly from the flow of immigrants into the USA. As well, we have stood beside those who have been abused and whose music has been maligned and/or ridiculed, if not completely ignored. The polka scene receives all of the benefits of forced segregation, which are none. Brave Combo has been fighting a battle against racism, prejudice and judgmental attitudes for almost 40 years and these days it feels like our attempts to open eyes and ears and minds have all been in vain. Even after many immigrants receive full legal status as American citizens, the abuse and prejudice continue, whether one’s family is from Mexico, Iran or Poland. Some people simply believe ‘different’ is bad and/or wrong.”
